The Tree Sparrow is smaller but very similar to the House Sparrow, it does mix with them when they overlap but it's much less urban, nor is it commensal with man. Like the House Sparrow, it's in steep decline in Britain, by over 90% this past forty years putting it firmly on the Red list. Another red list it was on of sorts was that of Chairman Moa, led to believe it was enough of an agricultural pest to justify a purge that in 1958 he included it in ' the great leap forward' by ordering the nation to kill all sparrows . China went on a peoples campaign to stamp out the Sparrow, many were harassed by people banging pots and pans together, the aim being to keep them airborne until they dropped from exhaustion and could be killed, others were shot, trapped and their nests destroyed. But the mob was soon killing anything that flew and many species became very rare or even extinct in China. For all that it didn't work, on the contrary with the reduction of a major predator insect populations increased , notably the Locust. When told as much he seems to have shrugged his shoulders and said forget it then. The Tree Sparrow has since recovered in China, unlike in Europe where the likes of intensive farming has sent it rare. If Moa Zedong hated the Sparrow so much he should have adopted something like the European Unions Common Agricultural Policy instead. His view was far from that of the past, the Tree Sparrow had for centuries been a favourite subject in Chinese art.

It was a part of the 'Four pests campaign' against the rat, mosquito, fly and tree sparrow.
